Everything you need to know about moving to NZ

It's funny what bothers you when you are contemplating moving half-way around the world - and the availability of your favourite brand of chocolate can be a major concern.

So we've compiled a list of some of the things that people ask us, and invite you to contact us with any suggestions of things you would like us to add. We've listed what we can find in usual retail outlets, but you will find just about everything you could possibly crave at specialty "British" and "foodie" shops - at a price, of course... 

Chocolate

Cadburys chocolate is widely available, and though slightly different in taste is still good. You'll find Lindt and Green and Black at bigger supermarkets. Galaxy chocolate is not available in New Zealand supermarkets, but Nestle is well worth trying for a sweeter chocolate. NZ brand Whittakers is good. 

Baby Supplies

Sudocream is not as widely used as in the UK, but is available at major supermarkets and in most pharmacies. If your local pharmacy does not have it on the shelf then ask, as a good pharmacy will get it in for you.

Calpol is known as Pamol, probably slightly different but the major bonus is that it does not stain so badly when spilled. You can get a prescription for paracetomol syrup from your doctor, but make sure you get the dosages right as there are two different strengths available.

Premium disposible nappy brands are Treasures and Huggies. Treasures has a cheaper line called Giggles. There are also supermarket own brands. One of the brands is usually on special most weeks at the supermarket.

Crisps

Crisps are known as chips. There are heaps of flavours and brands availalble, but you won't find Walkers crips - hence no prawn cocktail crisps! Pringles are widely available.

Marmite

Marmite is available in some bigger supermarkets, especially in areas where there is a sizeable population of Brits. It is sold under the name "My Mate" to save confusion with the local version. 

Tomato Sauce

Heinz is widely available, and local brand Watties also does a passable ketchup.

Non-Bio washing powder (laundry powder)

Some manufacturers have "sensitive" ranges, which are good. Ecostore does a very good powder which is kind to sensitive skin and works well with front loading machines - please note that most New Zealand laundry powders are formulated for top loading washing machines, and can damage front loaders. Buy front loader powder if possible, or use about half the recommended amount of detergent.
